[Project 2501] LiveUSB

Project 2501 (two-five-zero-one) [a.k.a. The Puppet Master] was created for the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a tool that could stealthily manipulate politics and intelligence, altering databases and the memories of key persons for the benefit of select individuals and organizations affiliated with the Ministry, and was equipped with unparalleled computer and cyberbrain hacking abilities.

[Project 2501] is a liveUSB distribution I have built using Arch Linux and the archiso scripts.  One of the things that makes this distribution a little different is that it focuses on tiling window managers.  If you don’t know what those are … here LMGTFY. Included window managers at this point are XMonad (using my config files), vanilla dwm, and subtle. I am not opposed to adding more in the future, so if your daily use tiling window manager isn’t on the list, let me know and I’ll do my best to get it on there.

The distribution itself houses packages that I use on a daily (or close to daily) basis.  So at least in the beginning this is mostly going to be based on what I want on it.  Feel free to suggest other software, but I am trying to keep this as light as possible.  If you would like to see a partial package list, click here.  The setup itself is very console based, with most of the programs I use being in the console.  To improve memory requirements I am running urxvtd.  All things considered it is not hard to keep total memory footprint under 1GB, even running a heavy browser session.

As of right now there is only a 32bit version of the distribution.  I run multiple machines and need to be able to launch this anywhere, so 32bit was the obvious choice since 64bit machines can still use it.  I am probably going to do a dual architecture at some point, just not with this first release.

A big thanks goes out to everyone that makes Arch Linux possible, and to pbrisbin for helping me with all things Haskell related!

    Hi,
    I burnt to cd.
The cd will not boot on 2 different machines.
It just halts after ‘booting from cd’ with flashing cursor……

Were you able to see the boot screen for the disc? It’s a light-blue grub-like selection screen and says project2501.

Sounds like a connection issue on your end. I just tested the download and was able to pull the entire file here. And I know of at least four other people who were able to download and boot into it.

If you are on a Linux box, I would try using wget to pull the file; as you can resume broken wget downloads.

I have project2501 running live for some hours now-great work!
I would love to be able to install this…

      Thanks! Glad you like it!

It’s definitely something that I want to do, but have to look into. Tonight I am adding the ability to install Arch (though only through a net-install), and updating all the packages along with some other stuff that is on my github. If that all goes smoothly then I will probably start looking into making the distribution installable. If that ends up being easy, it could see release by the end of the weekend … who knows? :)

Do you have any update on the installable version?

Didn’t get as much time to work on things as I wanted this past weekend; so sorry no updates. I briefly looked into it, but I don’t know if it will work or not, as the script I was looking at seemed to be not working anymore. Am slammed at work right now, so probably won’t get to it for another week or two. I did get an updated version of [project2501] built though; just need to test it and then I will upload it.
