Shigurui: Death Frenzy – Review
Something I want to start doing on a more regular basis are anime reviews. I am trying to also have a friend contribute, because he even rivals my anime list, but we shall see if that pans out. For this, the first review, I am going to talk about Shigurui: Death Frenzy; which I just finished last night.
Shigurui was adapted from a manga series of the same name (of which I have not read), and is short at only 12 episodes long (I watched it over 2 days). If follows the story of two rival samurai’s: Fujiki Gennosuke and Irako Seigen, who for a time trained under the same master. Let me first start by saying that this was definitely a MadHouse production: very graphic, very bloody, and very stylized! To be honest I almost turned it off, when in the very first episode, a samurai commits seppraku and then shoves his hand into his intestines (which you see from the inside) and rips them out onto the floor. F U C K I N G C R A Z Y! There are a very many scenes of graphic violence, nudity, homosexuality, and other things that some might find disturbing. Definitely not for the children; most certainly a very adult anime. Now, thats not to say that it’s excessive, because I think that all these things very much help to tell the story very well, just giving you fair warning!
The swordplay is also nothing short of amazing! The battles in this are decided not by supernatural feats so much as precise timing and grip on ones sword. There are more than a few episodes where my mouth was left gaping at the extraordinary skill shown by those in the Kogan style. The sensei crazy fast, and good; and yet totally violent, perverse, and bat-shit all at the same time!
I am going to give my overall score here, because below this are spoilers about the story. So overall, I would give this an 8/10. Definitely worth watching if you have the stomach for it!
