Got my new box up and running this morning! Had a little detour last night when a good friend stopped by and we proceeded to drink beers and talk about technology and Japan (which usually turns into quite long discussions)! But we are up and running now and she is purring like a kitten!
Specs:
AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
OCZ Agility 3 2.5" 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) FPB 1GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
So far what I notice the most is the SSD. Read and Write times are insanely fast compared to my old drive! It’s not a large drive, so I decided to use that for only /boot and / , and have my /home mounted on a normal 1Tb drive. Seems to be working out very nicely thus far. I also did some testing on some of my past renders, notably my grass scene, and my grass animation. Overall this processor is definitely faster than the Core2Quad that I was using, generally giving me about a 70% increase in my render times across both those animations. Haven’t had a chance to test out the video card’s render times yet … thats next!

–Update–
Was trying out some new window managers … but ended up back with XMonad. I always try to make whatever I am trying (dwm, scrotwm, wmii, etc) more like XMonad, so I might as well just stay where I am happy. Anyway, below are my latest desktop shots:
