Macross Frontier

I think I should probably preface this by saying that I am pretty much a Macross whore. I have seen just about everything with Macross in front of it, from the original series, SDF Macross, to all the movies and OAVs that they produced. So when I saw that there was another Macross series, I jumped on it as quick as I could (which was obviously about 4 years late lol).

I have to say that I truly enjoyed this series! There were tons of references to the original series, and it stuck to the tried and true Macross formula of wrapping a ton of music into everything. From the songs sang by Cheryl to Ranka, they were all great and worked wonderfully in the series. It’s one of the few series where I actually listened to the introduction and closing songs every episode … which seriously is really rare for me! Anyone who knows Macross, knows how much of a role music plays in the series, and this was no exception. Every song they played was amazing, from the vocals to the musical arrangement, it was all amazing. The pieces fit perfectly into all the action scenes, and really made you feel the action even more!

The story itself was also really good. It mostly focused around a single fighter pilot, Alto, and his friends. The series had a great mix of love triangle, high action, rescue, and all the other hallmarks of a great Macross series. I don’t want to give away too much, as there are actually some pretty good twists and turns in the series (including a great ending twist surrounding Cheryl and Ranka).

My only complaint was the ending. It’s not that it wasn’t good … it was a good ending, I just wanted more. But really the ending fit well with the series and it is rare that after I watch a good series that I don’t want more. I guess I need to watch the second movie, as supposedly it has some new story in it.

Overall I give it a 8.5/10; a great series that any Macross fan should love!
